In the eyes of your dog, nothing says ‘I love you’ more than a tasty treat. If you’re looking to spoil your greyhound and create something at home, rather than just going out and buying expensive dog treats, try one of our delicious recipes and watch your pooch devour every morsel in the blink of an eye.

Mini Carrot Cupcakes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups shredded carrots
  • ½ cup stewed apple
  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • 2 tbs cinnamon
  • 3 eggs
  • ½ cup rolled oats

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 180º
  2. In a large bowl, mix in shredded carrots, eggs, stewed apple
  3. In a separate bowl, mix flour, oats and cinnamon
  4. Stir the dry ingredients into the carrot mixture until fully mixed (the mixture will be quite thick, but you can add a little water if you find the mixture too dry).
  5. Spoon the mixture into mini muffin cups, using a wet finger to press the dough into place (the dough will only rise slightly when cooked so don’t fret about over filling the cups).
  6. Bake for 25 minutes
  7. Cool on wire rack

Liver treats

Ingredients:

  • 450g chicken or beef liver
  • 1 egg
  • 8 cloves garlic
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 180º
  2. Puree liver
  3. Mix in egg, garlic and flour
  4. Spread mixture onto baking sheet so it’s approx. 1cm in thickness
  5. Bake for 30 minutes
  6. Allow to cool
  7. Using a pizza cutter, cut into small squares

Peanut butter bikkies

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups wholemeal self-raising flour (or cornflour for a wheat-free alternative)
  • 1 cup peanut butter (smooth or crunchy)
  • 1 cup soy milk
  • ½ cup melted carob (add 1 tbsp canola oil for consistency if necessary)

Method:

  1. Preheat oven to 180º
  2. In a bowl, mix the peanut butter and milk, then add the flour.
  3. Sprinkle some flour on a surface and knead the resulting dough on it for a couple of minutes.
  4. Roll the dough out to about 1 cm thick and cut with cookie cutter or small round lid
  5. Place cut dough on a tray lined with baking paper and bake for 20 mins.
  6. Note: Please watch the biscuits carefully as they cook because they burn easily.
  7. Once cooked, allow the biscuits to cool completely, then dip into more melted carob and allow it to harden.
