Important changes to the blanket ban of pets in strata

You wouldn't be mistaken for hearing the faint sound of animal lovers jumping for joy on 25th August – this date marks the end of blanket bans on animals in NSW apartments.

We can thank the minister for Better Regulation, Kevin Anderson (who is an avid dog-lover) for reviewing the Strata Schemes Management Act 2015 to ensure they reflect broader community expectations. 

The changes are also not surprising given the rise in apart living, combined with the fact that Australia has one of the highest pet ownership rates in the world, with 40% of Aussies sharing their home with a dog.

What do these changes mean?

·       It is now illegal for strata to put blanket bans on animals in apartment blocks.

·       Unless there is a situation where the animal unreasonably interferes with other residents' use and enjoyment of their own property, there is no excuse to deny you ownership of a pet.

·       If the Owner's Corporation requires animals to be approved, they must make a decision within a reasonable timeframe or the animal will be automatically approved under the new law
