Celebrating Halloween is gaining popularity in Australia, and while celebrations are nowhere near the likes of America, it’s not uncommon to see kids trick-or-treating and suburbs getting behind these ghoulish festivities.
If you plan on celebrating Halloween this year, please keep in mind that this can cause undue stress to your pooch. Here are some tips and tricks to keep your dog safe and allow them to celebrate with you:
Chocolate is toxic for dogs: Chocolates and sweets are toxic for dogs, so be sure to keep the big bowl of treats away from them and reserve them only for trick-or-treaters. We suggest placing them in a bowl, on a high shelf, or inside a cupboard to ensure your curious pooch doesn’t have access to them.
Costumes might seem cute but are not always practical: If you’re planning on dressing your dog up, ensure that the outfit does not restrict their movement, overheat them or act as a choking hazard. We suggest that you keep an eye on your pooch at all times so that you’re aware of any signs of distress.
Keep decorations outside: Try and keep all of the decorations outside, and away from your pooch. Things like fake web, pumpkins, and candles can cause some serious issues if they are ingested by your pooch.
Restrain your pooch: If your dog has a habit of jumping on visitors, consider keeping them in the backyard or restrained in the house.
Dedicated safe space: Constant knocking at the door throughout the evening can overstimulate your dog. Ensure your pooch has a safe place to retreat if they need some time alone.
Any sudden environmental changes can be a stressful experience for your pet, so please keep this in mind when planning for your Halloween celebrations this year.
