Exertional Rhabdomyolysis (aka Rhabdo) is a metabolic disease that affects athletic and working dogs like Greyhounds. It is caused by muscle cell damage from extreme muscle work on a farm, racing, or if the dog is just exceptionally active.
Rhabdo can occur during short, high-intensity workouts. Symptoms include dehydration, sudden pain and/or weakness in limbs, disorientation, and nausea.
Greyhounds may be especially susceptible to rhabdomyolysis since they love to run and can potentially overexert themselves if they aren't monitored.
Symptoms are very similar to heat exhaustion, however, are much more serious and can lead to an irregular heartbeat and severe kidney failure in a very short period of time. This condition is much less common than heat stroke however heat stroke can also lead to rhabdomyolysis and can also be a symptom of a snake bite.
What to look for:
● Sudden changes in a dog's movement
● Excessive panting
● Shaking
● Humped back which can be tender to the touch
● Sensitivity in hind quarters
● Unsteady on their feet
● Red/Dark brown urine
What to do:
● Immediately stop exercising
● Cool your pooch down using lukewarm/tepid water initially poured over their body and legs and gradually reduce the temperature of the water.
● Offer them small and consistent amounts of water to sip but not gulp.
