CBD oil was discovered in the 1940s and is an extract from the cannabis or hemp plant, which contains high levels of cannabidiol, and very low levels of THC (ie. the ingredient that causes the ‘high’ effect).
It has recently gained popularity in treating human ailments, and has unsurprisingly led to a surge in the therapeutic treatment of canine conditions such as arthritis and anxiety. CBD oil is extensively used overseas and is now legally available in Australia via prescription from your vet.
Benefits of CBD oil
CBD oil is thought to be helpful for dogs with epilepsy, arthritis, chronic pain, anxiety, and depression.
There have been limited studies on overall effectivity, however, the studies that have been undertaken have received promising results:
Arthritis treatment: A four-week clinical study in 2021 utilising 20 large dogs showed meaningful results. The dogs that received CBD oil saw significant improvement in both their mobility and quality of life – maintaining effectivity even 2 weeks after their dose had ended.
Epilepsy treatment: A 12-week trial on dogs with epilepsy saw a whopping 33% reduction in seizures. Dogs with higher concentrations of CBD in their blood plasma exhibited fewer seizures.
Improvement of heart health: CBD oil has been proven to act as an antiarrhythmic for dogs with heart arrhythmia issues. The reduction of arrhythmia lowers the risk of cardiac events and helps to improve blood flow to major organs.
Further studies need to be conducted to confirm some of the other benefits touted by CBD oil including:
· Reducing anxiety
· Alleviate allergies
· Relief from chronic pain
· Improve appetite
· Improve sleep
Please speak to your vet if you are exploring the use of CBD oil for your pooch. We strongly advise against purchasing CBD oil from online (and illegal) suppliers where quality and dosage are unregulated and therefore dangerous.
